Here is Finding Out Any Type of Halal Animal that we must know.
Halal animal based on Al-Qur’an and Hadist
The first one is any animal who lives in the sea or water. Almost all animals who lived in the water is halal. Except, some of it that looks like haram animals, such as walrus. As in Quran: “Lawful to you is game from the sea and its food as provision for you and the travelers…” .(QS. Al-Maidah : 96)
The second is animal who lives in land or cattle, except some that already prohibited by ALLAH SWT. Livestock, such as cow, goat, lamb, buffalo, and camel, are part of halal animal. As ALLH SWT said: “…Lawful for you are the animals of grazing livestock … (QS. Al-Maidah [4[:1)
Halal animal based on hadith
Based on some hadith, there are five animals that can be counted as halal, such as horse, wild donkey/himar, chicken, locust/grasshopper, and rabbit. Some hadith that talked about those animals law:
“We slaughtered a mare, during the lifetime of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and we ate it”. (Bukhari and Muslim)
“On the occasion of Khaibar we consumed the meat of horses and wild donkeys, but the Nabi of Allah prevented us from eating the meat of domestic donkeys”. (Muslim)
“I saw the Messenger of Allah (Allah bless him & give him peace) consuming (the meat of) chicken”. (Bukhari)
“We once fought alongside the Prophet in seven times of war, we ate locusts with him”. (Bukhari)
Halal animal based on ulama ijtima/opinion
There are three types of animals that considered as halal based on ulama opinion. The first is a weasel. Although it has canine, but weasel doesn’t frighten or prey humans or other animals and it is also include as good animal/Thoyib.
Second, squirrel. It is written in Hasyiah Al Jumal book, fiqih book of Syafi’i: “And squirrel is also halal. It is an animal from kangaroo family that the skin was taken for fur clothes…”
Last is hedgehog. The person who said hedgehog is categorized as halal is Imam Asy Syafi’i and his followers, such as Imam Laits bin Sa’ad and Imam Abu Tsaur. Hanbali also said hedgehog is halal, as his followers agree on, such as Imam Asy Syaukani and Imam Ash Shan’ani. Also, some stories and opinions from Maliki section.
